Disappointing quality,
December 16, 2007

By&nbsp, bbfla Florida, USA See all my reviews

This review is from: Garmin 4.3 Inch Carrying Case Accessory

I do not understand all the glowing reviews for this case: depending on the many four and five star ratings given by other holders, I figured it was a no brainer and placed my order.

When it arrived, I has been surprised to discover that the leather is coarse and thin and that there’s no real padding for the Nuvi.

Basically, this is two pieces of hard plastic over which many low grade leather was stretched. The best thing I can say about it’s that it fits the 650 snugly at least firstly which is vital, as one end of the case remains open providing easy access to the headset port and SD card slot, also as a possible avenue for the carelessly handled Nuvi to slip out.

Do not look for a belt clip or carry strap choice, either. This is simple protection of the most basic sort.

I don’t expect this case to wear well, it just is not constructed for regular daily use.

Given the price and quality of the Nuvi 600s, I projected better in a case.

BTW, shame on Garmin for not as well as many flimsy basic protection like this in the box with the 650!

Unless it’s vital to you to get something with the Garmin name on it, I could tell shopping for a much more lasting and protecting alternative to this case.
REAL NAME

This review is from: Garmin 4.3 Inch Carrying Case Accessory

I bought this case from my Nuvi 760, I could purchase it again.

Pros

+ reinfoced front and back makes for a tough case that guards the device from both scratches and impacts

+ snug but easy to get in and out has not ever slipped out

+ good size, it’s about as small as it can be

+ soft interior to prevent scratches

+ small sleeve on the side

Cons

It’s snug enough to on occasion slide the power switch on the 760 as I take it in or out. I have to be sure it goes in with the switch down and locked so it does not come on when I put it in. Coming on on the way out is not such a big deal since I typically want to use it.

Overall this is a great case, if you’re cautious you could call auto power on a feature!

Garmin nvi 750 Auto Navigation System

I just picked up one of these for a nuvi 750 as the case is listed as matched on the garmin site. Stylish looking case but, the 700 series is thinner then 600 series. If you hold the case upside down, the nuvi will fall out. Be caareful.

It does melt the ice off the wind shield. But the rain x part is not to remarkable. It does not really bead the water off the windshield like regular rain x does. Also theres the annoying hazy glare that windsheiled water dispersers have when you use your wipers. If you do not want that then just get a de icer that does not have rain x in it.
&nbsp,&nbsp,

Blue Coral manufactures an excellent de icer liquid that sprays out of the can and melts away ice nearly instantly. I on occasion use Pres before I attempt this brand of de icer because Pres is somewhat more powerful, but when I’m out of that brand this product really does the job just also. There’s no big difference between Rain X de icer and Pres de icer.

In addition, the bottle comes with an ice scraper. It is not the best ice scraper but it works well to take off little bits of ice that remain on your windshield after you use this spray.

Of course, Blue Coral is an aerosol spray, the makers of this product “Rain X” should do better than that to be environmentally friendly. Do not store it in places where small kids or pets could get to it. Also, if Blue Coral ever gets on your hands, wash them carefully to take off the de icer liquid. It is not exactly supposed to be ingested! there’s one other caveat you may find a thin coat of ice in many places on your windshield when you use Blue Coral. If that happens, use the ice scraper that comes with this or, if you have to reach more, use a longer and bigger ice scraper.

Sometimes when I use this product some beads of the Blue Coral liquid add with some the water from the melted ice on the windshield. Then the liquid beads can sit there on the windshield and freeze again pretty quickly. If this happens, clean the beads of liquid off now using a heavy responsibility paper towel or a rag.

Overall, Blue Coral de icer is a product I have used and will use again. Now that winter is upon us I will be using it soon.

Was surprised at how light this thing is. Like holding air. Not sure how long it’ll last as it’s so not there if you know what I mean. That being said it works quite well and appears to be correct after testing it against three other resources. The red back light is cool and needed for low light situations. Well worth the money I think, and could purchase again. The slime merchandise are all worth having. I keep the liquid slime in the trunk with a black and decker power station for jump starts and airing up tires.

This digital gauge sets itself separately by measuring 0 99 PSI, and having a backlit LCD readout for night time looking at. It is as correct as any of my other gauges. I did not give it five stars because the battery isn’t easily replaceable you have to unscrew to open the case, and I do not know what is inside yet, and the measuring nozzle isn’t lit up for night time measuring, like the other inexpensive Slime gauge but that one only goes down to five PSI.

I have only used this gauge some times and it looks to work well. The tool doesn’t give the impression of being high quality, but unlike many of the gauges reviewed here it makes an excellent seal with the valve. I cant really comment on the accuracy of the reading, but it surely appeared to be ok, and the backlit LED display is easy to read and offers a choice of measurement units. For the price its not a bad tool to keep in your car.

Great gym bag holds a ton of stuff! I really like the separate compartment for my sneakers. The other side pocket is great for holding the toiletries I lug to and from the gym. The front pocket is great for my ipod, keys, gym card, etc. I have received many of compliments on this bag!
4.0 out of five stars
Nuvi 855: remaining Value, in spite of many shortcomings,
June 11, 2009

By&nbsp, nuvifan Redmond, WA See all my reviews

This is an unusually long product review, but I just could not help but brag about the Nuvi 855, also as express some number of complaints about Garmin shortcomings.

Pros and Cons of the Garmin Nuvi 855

PROs: Custom routing, easy setting unit options, responsiveness to my spoken commands, fast map scrolling via finger movement, Lane help arrows are helpful, map detail is better than on the 755/765, place names appear on screen as you drive, broad and easy use to use Points of Interest database, and POIs may be displayed on map if you decide.

CONs: Volume needs to be louder, warnings of forthcoming turns should come sooner, inadequate online manual gives inadequate detail about unit operations,, can not really turn unit completely OFF, Lane help displays are limited, important learning curve obliged to confidently program ANY Garmin to react as the user wants.

Primary GPS function and Recent Nuvi Ownership

I greatly recommend the Nuvi 855, but my perspective is mainly depending on three road trips, using its Custom Routing feature, plus recent experience with two other Nuvis. My major function was to create particular routes before trips, like eight driving days averaging 500 miles each, on unfamiliar highways and city streets and also finding McDonalds when we wanted. I benefited tremendously from the strange experience of using a Garmin 760 for a month last year, then newly driving 4,000 miles with a more advanced 755.But returned it to get this remaining value in an 855. I have since used the 855 on a one week trip and completely expect the bulk of its features to work as they have on the earlier 760 and 755.

We don’t need Bluetooth due to our pre installed car option, nor the free Traffic alert service found it usually useless in 755, nor the 3 D buildings or Eco path features in other Garmins. Possibly commuters could enjoy the Traffic service in other Nuvis, but our restricted highway trip experience found it alerted unnecessarily, and offered unhelpful detour advice: We thought it an interesting gimmick, but which Garmin may well improve over time.

Low Volume

Many reviewers complain the 855 volume is so low as to justify returning their units. Really, low volume can be the common complaint seen online among all Nuvis. My wife and I agree that volume on the 760/755/855 is too low, but we have never missed a turn because of it: We typically anticipate when an vital voice instruction is coming, and turn down the stereo and close windows to “listen harder.” it is a slight bother, but that major flaw is worth overlooking. Everyone should be sure to check both possible “Volume” settings: the major one should be at 100 volume, but also set “Mixer” to have all three volume modifications at 100. One other learned trick is that users can press the “Next Turn” arrows upper left corner, and hear again the forthcoming turn instruction, also as have it display the forthcoming intersection simultaneously. I nearly generally check the “next turn” instruction well before forthcoming turns, I also find it useful to press the green text line at the top of the map screen to display a summary of some number of forthcoming turns on my path. This practice should prove useful with many other Nuvi models.

Low volume is a distinct Garmin flaw, but we enjoyed the 755 for 4,000 miles in spite of it. We typically had many wind sound with the sunroof and rear windows open, but could close them IF necessary when we anticipated receiving an instruction, like at the .8 mile mark before a turn, we usually pressed the screen to re hear an instruction, also as to view the turn well beforehand. I urge others to work to overcome the volume issue. And move on to take pleasure in the other benefits of an 855. We think the 855 volume is just as usable as our last units. But, I do intend to download a liked voice editor, which other Nuvi holders bragged about, because it lets them increase the volume of spoken information.

Lane help and connection View

855 purchasers should also be aware that Lane help and connection View are much complained about Garmin features, caused by the fact that they’re mainly available only in big metropolitan regions and on interstate highways. In spite of that, we enjoyed the 755 Lane help many turn lane arrows coming out many times throughout our trip through Salt Lake, Phoenix, Tucson, and San Diego, and found it useful. We wished connection View pictures of the green interstate highway signs appeared more frequently, but thought them usually needless except passing through Portland area @ I 205 and I 5 interchanges, where they were helpful. I expect 855 service to be same,

Remote Control Voice Command

My wife and I are tremendously happy with the 855 Remote Command function and expect that it’ll be useful in future driving, also as a nice diversion to play with. The remote responded FAR better in our road testing than I may have imagined, it’s much safer than the manual modifications I was earlier making while driving stupid man tricks at 70 MPH are a thing of the past!.

I compiled my own list of the remote Voice Commands, and has been surprised to find some number of that aren’t in the manual. Nearly any menu instruction may be given by voice, making the 855 more working than projected. You may be surprised to learn that the following commands also work: Yes, No, Back, Page Up/Down, Scroll Up/Down, Clear, and Delete. I have also discovered that “Next Turn” will repeat the spoken instruction for the forthcoming turn, this is useful to check many miles before your turn. Once the “Next Turn” graphic is displayed, the user can command successive forthcoming turns to be displayed and spoken. Among my favorite commands are “Zoom In” and “Zoom Out,” instead of reaching and pressing on the screen while driving. Any sound problems in making ourselves understood are easily overcome, as my co pilot wife can generally intervene with manual operation when we’re moving.

I find it simple to use the Voice Commands, but only because I played with the menu settings manually in three Nuvis. , I can typically interact freely with the 855 Voice Commands, and flow from one screen to another while driving, without letting the remote shut off before I am finished with it. On the other hand, I do wish that the green “On” icon could stay active longer than it does: Keeping an eye on the icons and flicking one’s vision back and forth from the road to menu alternatives is a important distraction, and possibly dangerous. I think it vital to attempt and bound Voice Command use to situations where traffic is light, and oncoming vehicles aren’t present. I attempt to do broad menu functionings by voice for situations where I feel safe diverting my attention from driving, on the other hand, my wife is becoming more comfy at searching through the menus by herself, and enjoys the 855 as much as I.

Routing Accuracy and Points of Interest

Accuracy of our Nuvi information have usually been excellent, as is the broad Point Of Interest POI database and operation. We have had many Garmin map goofs and sporadic mis routing, but have extreme confidence that we’ll be rerouted quickly and properly to fix mistakes we make in taking wrong turns. Depending on our last broad Garmin experience, I expect the same great service with the 855 model.

In contrast to sporadic Nuvi annoyances, one of its best features is the confidence it gives us that whenever we goof up such as missing a turn, when it’ll speak up nearly now with a “recalculation.” likewise, whenever we’re uncertain if we have made a correct turn, the fact that NO “recalculation” occurs gives us confidence that we’re still “on track.” when not on a path, we love being able to drive anywhere unfamiliar, and know that we can just search for a big landmark street or POI.And get ourselves “back to civilization.”

The POIs come in useful in some number of situations that one may not ordinarily think about. For example, when in a weird city, one can find gas stations by brand or chain restaurants, find the way back to your motel, find a close park to relax after a tiring daylong drive, also. It’s also useful to search for places of interest before a trip, and learn how far they’re from your overnight lodging as well as establish a path to them. I find the GPS far easier to find POIs than following information from well meaning strangers.

We were irritated using POI’s to find one McDonalds: Voice command and manual controls via some number of search techniques failed to recognize a McD along our path, and we gave up.Despite being certain there was one close. Twenty miles afterward, upon arrival in the parking lot of a McD, the 855 still couldn’t find it via “Where I’m Now.” We have also experienced slight mistakes in POI places for two other burger places, but both were close enough that we found them anyways. , we learned that Nuvi is not perfect, and learned to reimburse. And “grin and bear” its boo boos.

Learning to Use Any Nuvi

It looks that all big gps brands lack a in depth, printed manual, instead, they supply an online manual. But, online information especially Garmin! are inadequate to completely show all unit capacities and economical use. I have read the online manual for each of my Nuvis, but hate the fact that they’re so incomplete. Garmins have a just total material in the onboard “Help” feature, which is useful when you’re away from your computer. These Help references are brief, but, and.

May be worse than the 7×5 models,
May 10, 2009

By&nbsp,fredf888 CA United States See all my reviews

If you assume the 8×5 models are automatically better than the 7×5 models, you can be surprised based on what features are vital to you.

The most remarkable feature of the 855 is the voice command. Many voice commands, like “volume up”, may be done from any screen. Doing “volume up” on the touch screen could involved five presses: “menu”, “volume”, “+”, “back”, & “view map”. You do have to keep an eye on the screen and speak only after you see the green symbol on the upper right corner. You may be able to speak the name of the place stored in Favorites, like “San Francisco City Hall”. Other systems could have obliged you to speak the line number.

The most disappointing feature of this 855 is the in general sluggishness of the system caused by the voice command system. The screen refreshes gradually in comparison to Nuvi 765’s super smooth refresh. The 855’s CPU is just not fast enough to do voice command and high refresh rate simultaneously. Garmin eliminated the cool 3D building feature from 765, seemingly in an effort to minimize CPU handling. Garmin may have kept the refresh rate high while voice command isn’t being used. But doing so could illuminate the refresh problem more vividly once the user presses the remote button to speak.

To use voice command effectively, you have to turn your car’s audio system volume down before you speak, then back up afterwards. The better solution is to use the 855’s fitted FM transmitter and put your music on a micro SD card. A two GB card is about $7. Nuvi will automatically reduce the music volume throughout voice commands or announcements. But that means you can not listen to regular radio transmits. The FM transmitter worked well in my Toyota Highlander which has a front antenna. But the FM transmitter was totally not usable in my Toyota Prius which has a roof mounted antenna. Many new cars have small roof mounted antennas and most likely won’t work well with 855’s FM transmitter. But, if the new car has an MP3 jack, then you may be able to run a cable from 855’s audio out jack to the car’s MP3 jack.

Update: After using the FM transmitter for some weeks in my Highlander, it did worse than I first thought. Bear in mind that my Nuvi 855 has direct line of sight of my Highlander’s hood mounted antenna. Power lines not close by disrupted the transmission easily and frequently. I dug up my old Iriver FM transmitter and hooked it up to the Nuvi’s audio out jack. The Iriver was way better and louder too. Some number of magazine reviews pointed out that the Nuvi’s FM transmitter has been underpowered now I have to agree. Garmin’s Webupdater log showed an update to the FM transmitter’s firmware to “comply with European standard”. I imagine that meant a reduction of FM transmission power. Tomtom forum also has many posts that recent firmware updates reduced the FM transmission power. Possibly the FCC or the authority in Europe are now more vigilant in checking FM transmitter’s power so cars beside you will not get interference. The bottom line is that you’ll probably be disappointed if you have to use Nuvi’s FM transmitter.

I updated the system software via Webupdater. For many reasons, it unselected the City Navigator map. The next day I used it, it lost voice command and the map had only big highways. A call to technical support solved the problem. Only about seven minutes of wait time and the rep knew now what was wrong. But phone support is only available Monday through Friday.

Bluetooth connectivity isn’t provided in 855, a little surprising considering the price of this model. Routing is excellent and no stupid routes like my last Mio C520. But that’s projected of Garmin. I heard Tomtom is nearly as good now.

I wish Garmin could implement split screen like so many other manufacturers. To me, the map view of the road ahead is more vital than the sides. The left and right edges of the map screen are just wasted real estate. A split screen showing the next two or three turns could have been nice.

The lane help works great but not too many interchanges have that feature incorporated. The photo realistic screen is nice but not that useful. The many arrows representing the different lanes already gave me full info.

The Nuvi 855 isn’t a bad unit. But it does not live up to my expectations. If you value lane help and voice command and your car can work with its FM transmitter or audio out, and you do not mind the sluggish screen refresh rate, then this is a good unit. But, many people can be happier with the “lesser” models with no voice command.
Voice recognition is a must have for GPS!,
May 19, 2009

By&nbsp,Robert Schroeder Scottsdale, AZ See all my reviews

I bought the 855 as an upgrade to my StreetPilot C550. I was unwilling to purchase it, depending on the less than stellar reviews on here, but after using it for a week, I dont have complaints at all. Maybe that is caused by the fact that I am upgrading from the ancient 550, and not the 7X5 series. The other reviewers are right, the on/off switch may be uncomfortable, and you need a fingernail to push it over to the left. But that’s such a minor complaint, I believe. As well, many people say they like the smoother refresh that the 7X5 series has, and this is more jerky, as you move along your path. Well, you are not supposed to be watching it when you are driving anyway. Oh, and it only has 500 waypoints, in comparison to 1000 on other models. I will be lucky if I use 100.

What makes this GPS so extraordinary is the voice recognition! I feel like I am using Star Trek technology. It rarely has any problem understanding what I tell it. Hands free GPS navigation! I never have to pull over to type a new destination or attempt to do it while driving. I can not imagine any of the minor complaints offsetting the awesomeness of the voice recognition. Now that it is available, I would not have a GPS unit without it. If your budget lets for a voice recognition GPS with 1000 waypoints, an improved on/off switch, and smoother screen refresh, then by all means get that one. But if you are wanting to use up about $300, and want voice recognition, don’t hesitate to purchase the 855. I would not exchange it for a non voice recognition unit that has those features that this one lacks.

Good product. I got it primarily for the inside windshield on my SUV because it is so hard to get into the corners. This did well for that, but after I used it, thought I was done and put it away I noticed that it did streak. It took using it a couple times to get it right, but now my windshield looks great. I think the problem is that it is hard to get firm pressure on the complete “triangle” cleaning pad.

So by now all of us have seen the infomercial on a alike part of hardware to clean our windshields. But I don’t tend to purchase from TV and I came looking on AMAZON. I found this item and it looked a bit better from the one on TV.Simply due to triangular form in the front which really does assist you to reach the corners of the front windshield.

We have all cleaned windshields and simply put, the front ones are a ache in the neck. You may be able to never reach all the way down without many sort of acrobatic movements. This tool makes it simple.Spray the windshield with your beloved glass cleaner and clean it. Yes, it does take some passes to make it 100 clean. I mean.Sit down and use this thing.Your back will be thankful and cleaning the car won’t be a chore anymore.

The grip is nice and comfy which makes this feel like a high quality item. It comes with one microfiber and two mesh covers.Which are washable and re usable. The mesh is for hard scrubbing.. : where as the microfiber gives it a great finish.

I greatly recommend this to anybody and everyone that cleans their own car.

SureFire E2D LED Defender Flashlight Max-120 Lumens E2DL-BK specifications:

SureFire E2D LED Defender Flashlight Max-200 Lumens E2DL-BK Description:
Compact pocket sized, dual output LED flashlight intended for self defense and personal protection. The E2D LED Defender features a solid state, two stage light emitting diode that generates six times the output of a common two D cell flashlight at its high setting and five lumens of useful light enough to read a map or negotiate a black path on low. And should 200 lumens of blinding light not be enough to convince an aggressor to back off, the E2DL’s crenellated Strike Bezel and scalloped tailcap supply two sets of hard anodized aluminum “teeth” as a last line of defense. Two useful output levels, a long runtime, a hard anodized lasting outside, compact size, and improved personal protection potential make this flashlight a great everyday carry choice. Particularly for those looking for a self defense light with a bit more of a bite.

Terrific Light, as common, from Surefire,
January 14, 2009

REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

If you’re new to high powered flashlights, Surefire is the benchmark. This ain’t no Maglite. Made in USA, lifetime warranty with unbelievable buyer service, unequaled build quality, and state of the art LED’s. This light has two beams. One click gives you a focused beam with amazing power 120 Lumens. Click again and the lower powered beam is still plenty strong and will most likely be what you use more frequently. I really recommend the dual stage variant of this model. It is great to have a high powered beam when you need it, but walking the dog or searching for something in a tent does not need 120 lumens five is good. Battery life is great.

If spending this much money on a flashlight looks absurd, there are other alternatives at your disposal that are just as strong, but are made in China and do not come with the same warranty. These are Fenix I bought a P30D on for 65 dollars for a friend. That Fenix light does not have the same build quality as my Surefires, but has a alike beam and I could rate light output someplace between my L5 100 Lumen and this E2DL 120 Lumen. I could go with Surefire any day for the peace of mind that if I drop it in a river, it is going to work just good waterproof to “33 feet” at least, and the knowledge that it was made in the States.

Also, beware of LUMEN hype. Other manufacturers like Fenix make claims about light output that I have found to be around double of what Surefire rates. So a 220 lumen Fenix P30D looks to my eye to be around a 110 lumen Surefire. I did not test scientifically but I trust my eyes and it was certainly weaker than this 120 Lumen E2DL. Surefire is very conservative about their claims, which is in line with their stellar repute. As well, be sure whatever flashlight you are purchasing comes with the new LED’s, as technology is changing quickly and an updated light may have considerably better battery life than last LED models. Call or e mail Surefire and ask they’ll be straight with you. As of January ‘09, this specific light has the new CREE LED and is certainly state of the art. Also sorry Amazon, but Batteryjunction.Com ships Surefires free of charge with a bunch of free extra batteries. Enjoy!
Awesome LED illumination,
January 8, 2009

By&nbsp,Erik S. Minneapolis, MN See all my reviews

This became my second Surefire flashlight in 13 years. Ironically, Surefire looks to make such a reliable, lasting, and designed part of equipment that I can’t be the recurrent buyer I should be. Previous to this I owned a 9N flashlight, but the bulb assembly broke and can’t be replaced.

Enter the E2D LED.

I was 1st impressed with the smallness of this flashlight. It fits nicely into my hand, and equally so in a pocket. It feels light. The double tap activation switch works well, and I believe it to be a great bit of practical design. I don’t miss the “twist” kind of activation switch from my last Surefire. Switching from High to Low power on the E2D LED does take some practice, but once you get your timing down, it is not a consideration.

The full power light of this light is awe inspiring. I still feel nearly blinded when firstly firing this light up. I on occasion squint to overcome it. Seriously. The lower lumen setting is more than adequate for most night work, but I can see the effect of shining the full power light into someone’s eyes. The light cast by this flashlight is smooth, , and far reaching.

The ruggedness of the flashlight is good. The lens is protected and tough, and the light has still to fail caused by mechanical defect. I have had it for about six months now, and it became an nearly daily use tool. Incidentally, I’m still on the 1st set of batteries.

My only gripe with the flashlight is that the tail cap prevents “flat thumbing” the activation switch. It is hard to describe, but you must nearly reach your thumb over the rear cap wall, and point inwards ever so somewhat to activate the switch. For momentary activation it is no problem, but to click the light on permanently takes many finesse. This is by no means a problem in general, but I figure I have to find many faults, right?

In the end, this flashlight is well worth the initial high cost. If it lasts the 13 years that my 9N did, I’ll think about the cost to be a steal, really. The powerful light of the flashlight, the ergonomic feel, and the fact that it has an very technical almost Star Wars like look makes this the best flashlight I have owned.

This is one mean part of equipment, and will surely last through many high abuse.

I have some number of Surefire flashlights as well as the incandescent E2D Defender, the U2 super, G3 and M6. This new LED model is only a little bigger than the incandescent variant, but it is twice as bright, and it has a low power setting, too. It has great throw and a nice spill beam. This will be my carry light of choice.
Best and most cost effective product of its type,
July 5, 2009

REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

Short version:

Among all fuel system cleaners I am aware of, Redline SI 1 holds the highest quantity per dollar based on maker MSDS of the important fuel system cleaning compounds called polyether amines PEA. Mainly for this reason I believe SI 1 to be the best available and most cost effective fuel system cleaner product at retail pricing. ..

In my case it hasn’t been needed to use Redline’s suggested quantity of roughly three oz per fill up. The effects of one oz per fill up are indistinguishable by tested results see my base for this declaration below. This results in an estimated cost of $0.35/tank or less than a 10th of a penny per mile. A full case at this handling rate is enough to treat 180 full tanks of fuel or to last roughly 80,000 miles. Figures established 15gal/tank, 25 35mpg.

Long version:

As far as I know, every efficient fuel system cleaner on the market uses a class of compounds called polyether amines PEA, in varying proportions, to effectively clean deposits from fuel system parts, and especially from fuel injectors, which can quickly affect engine efficiency and performance when not operating properly. My understanding is that these compounds were 1st developed by Chevron and sold under the Techron name, and have since been made available to other blenders of fuel treatment merchandise. Till newly BG 44K, Chevron Techron Concentrate, Gumout Regane Fuel System Cleaner, Amsoil P.I. Performance Improver Concentrate, and Redline SI 1 among others listed polyether amines on their Material Safety Data Sheets MSDS in proportions varying from roughly 25 to 50. Most of these merchandise not list PEA on their MSDS, having changed their terminology to disguise the exact nature of their products’ constituent parts. If PEA is still contained in those merchandise is a matter of doubt. As of this writing Redline’s SI 1 MSDS still specifies that the product holds 30 50 PEA. Consequently it’s one of the not many left over fuel system cleaner merchandise that undoubtedly does contain PEA in important quantity.

I have been able to test the effectiveness of fuel system cleaners in one of my own vehicles using a technique I stumbled on after having its injectors professionally cleaned while out of the car. The car in question uses a Bosch engine management system that reports fuel injector data to an on board computer, which then uses that data to compute and report instant and average mpg to the driver. I noted after the professional cleaning that the accuracy of the stated mpg, when used to measure average mpg over each full tank of fuel, improved from a previous error of around 3 5 that is, the stated mpg was 3 5 below the real mpg, or usually just over 1mpg low to an error as close to zero as I could measure that is, typically between 1 and 1, fluctuating above and below a perfect “match”. This may be clarified on the base that the engine management system will reimburse for a dirty injector by holding the injectors open somewhat longer throughout each combustion cycle, to admit the correct total of fuel. The on board computer interprets that as a somewhat higher rate of fuel intake, reporting a lower than actual mpg figure.

After some number of thousand miles not long the perfect mpg accuracy I’d noticed started to deteriorate, probably showing that the cleaned injectors beginned to suffer from many sort of renewed blockage to fuel flow. Out of a want to keep near perfect injector performance, and also out of curiosity, I started experimenting with different commercially available fuel system cleaners and keeping records of the results at each fill up.

Leaving out the long details, I will simply say here that the results were amazingly clear and unambiguous. Every time I went some number of tanks without using a fuel system cleaner usually consequently of simply forgetting to use it or not taking the trouble, the on board computer OBC accuracy could deteriorate. This could change from tank to tank, of course, consequently of inevitable measurement errors, but the trend was clear over a few fill ups. Returning to the use of a fuel system cleaner Chevron Techron Concentrate, Gumout Regane or SI 1, all of which at the time did contain PEA, the accuracy could improve again quickly inside 2 3 fill ups. I began using the SI 1 entirely seven months ago depending on its obvious cost effectiveness and since then I reduced the quantity I use in each tank to the current 1oz per 15gal fill up. The results remain unambiguous. If I use this small total of SI 1 steadily, the accuracy of the on board computer is excellent, with an average error of below 1, or a small percentage the error rate seen when not using such a product.

Based on the above I feel I can confidently complete that SI 1 works well, at reduced treatment rates, at keeping fuel injectors clean. Fuel system types and injectors will differ, and other parts of the fuel system as an example intake valves and combustion chambers may gain from higher treatment rates or, conceivably, may not benefit at all. Real engine efficiency won’t differ almost as much as injector hygiene, since the engine feedback system usually corrects for imperfect injector flow rates. But, as the flow is more largely impeded, or impeded differentially among the individual injectors, mpg will be influenced to many degree. I feel it’s well worth the tiny cost to steadily use a small quantity of SI 1. Other benefits, like to combustion efficiency consequently of combustion chamber hygiene, to volumetric efficiency consequently of intake valve hygiene, and to fuel system lubrication, most likely exist also though I can’t evaluate them and haven’t attempted to do so. Other fuel system cleaners may work as effectively, or almost as effectively, but I don’t believe them to be as good by value per dollar spent.

In my experimentation I did attempt many less costly fuel system cleaners, those not containing PEA. They appeared to dont have effect. I can’t categorically state that only PEA containing fuel system cleaners work, of course, but my observations did match the regular wisdom on this point. I also experimented with using top tier fuels only, without any extra fuel system cleaners. The results were the same as when using non detergent Costco and others fuels. I do not doubt that top tier fuels contain small amounts of cleaners and will keep a fuel system functionally and acceptably clean, but the amounts involved are reputed to be tiny and my observations seem to point to that a small total of extra additive is far more efficient.

I also like Techron, because it looks to give me a smoother idle over each tank of gas. Redline looks to bring out the raw power of my engine though.

I am not a mechanic, but it looks to work for me.

I can echo what Glenn said in his review. I started using fi cleaners back in the early 80’s. A new Volvo 242 I had bought new started to do sluggishly. Another owner suggested a fi cleaner which I tried and it worked pretty well. Over the past 28 years I have tried just about everything on the market. Many worked well, others did not. The Red Line SI 1 works better than the others I have tried. The BG cleaner works well too, but at three times the cost.

I ordered this tailgate from and it arrived in less than a week. It looked great coming out of the box. It took about 20 minutes to install the new tailgate there are some minor mods needed but easy to accomplish. The last product fit like a glove and looks great.

The only concern I had was that when I looked at the product I checked the “Make Sure It Fits” box and found there were tailgates available for my Ford truck. As I ordered the tailgate there was no acknowledgement from that I was really ordering the correct tailgate for my 2000 Ford Super responsibility truck. Not anything that I ordered a Ford tailgate. I was not sure if I was to get the correct tailgate till it arrived there was a sticker on the outside of the box showing that it could fit my truck.

Other than that it, the tailgate is a good purchase.

The tailgate that has been delivered had a new “ECO” finish applied, not polished aluminum as I projected. Just, it’s painted shiny gray. Still a nice unit, just maybe not what you expect finish wise.
